We are so excited to announce our first community snorkel of the summer on July 10th from 12 pm-3 pm! River snorkeling is an incredible way to see aquatic animals, like trout, in their natural habitat and gain a new perspective on what conservation means to you.
This snorkel will be hosted at Todd Island Park, in partnership with Todd Community Preservation Organization (TCPO) and MountainTrue’s Upper New Riverkeeper. TCPO’s mission is “To develop our community by sustainable means while preserving our history, our cultural heritage, and our natural resources”. Todd Island Park was recently designated as NC Mountain Heritage Trout Waters, highlighting the current and historical value of the cold, clean water of the South Fork of the New River.
At the snorkel, the Upper New Riverkeeper will give a brief aquatic ecology lesson, share fish identification tips, and give a safety talk. We will also be joined by a TCPO Board Member who will discuss ongoing restoration projects, the summer concert series, and what the river means to them. After that, we will put on wetsuits, wading boots, and snorkels, and explore the river together.
There is also a non-wetsuit option, where you can use a viewbucket to see underwater, without getting fully submerged.
