Once one of the most booming burgs in the High Country-thanks to a prominent past as a timber town-Todd is now one of Watauga County's hidden treasures. The town that once roared with logging trains going in and out now has a quiet, rustic charm. Located on the New River, Todd offers some of the area's best opportunities for fishing and paddle sports. It's also a great spot for cycling, thanks to its timber harvesting past. To this day, Railroad Grade Road is as long and flat and scenic a bike ride as you can find.
Todd has many historic buildings including the Todd General Store. One step through the front door takes you back to the old days. Every Friday evening, the store hosts a traditional mountain music jam that attracts people from all over. There's story-telling on Tuesday evening, and book signings on Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. Across the street from the store is a town park that hosts many musical shows on its stage.
Another great thing about Todd? Getting there or coming back winds you along some of the area's most scenic roads and leads to other great attractions. Elk Knob and New River, two of the High Country's four great State Parks, are a great part of a day that includes Todd. Don't miss this corner of the High Country.
