Fresco painting is an ancient art, one that traditionally binds pigment directly to wet plaster on a wall. This method makes moving such a piece an immense undertaking—akin to relocating a three-thousand-pound section of masonry! Yet, that's precisely what transpired when Rumple Memorial Church in Blowing Rock learned that two of Ben Long's frescoes were in need of a new home. This monumental effort ensured that Ben Long's entire collection of frescoes could finally be reunited in his home state of North Carolina.
Benjamin F. Long IV, a native of Asheville, NC, learned fresco painting from a master artist in Italy for nearly eight years. He returned with his newfound skill and eventually donated his services to two small churches in West Jefferson. Most associate the art form with Italian churches and grand, historic places, but some masterpieces can be found in unlikely locations. The two now-relocated frescoes, depicting Psalm 23 and The Good Shepherd, had been commissioned by a hospice facility and therefore were not on display for the public.
Now, with the addition of the "lost" frescoes in Blowing Rock, all 14 of Ben Long's beautiful frescoes can be found between Charlotte and the NC High Country. They adorn church walls, but also schools and domes, corporate offices and universities. Road trip on the Ben Long Fresco Trail to the breathtaking mountain scenery in Western North Carolina and discover Ben Long's world-class artistry along the way.
Learn all about how the two frescoes were created by exploring exhibits and speaking with the knowledgeable Fresco Ministry docents at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church. The frescoes can be seen from Friday through Sunday. Each hour, an 8-minute video shows the history of the church, the artist, and the art's recent relocation.
