Enjoy this graceful sport in the wintry wonderland setting of a High Country ski resort.
In the Boone Area, it's easy to step right into the classic Currier & Ives vision of early American ice skating-outdoors, with friends and family around you, and a nip in the air.
All three High Country ski resorts boast enticing outdoor ice rinks surrounded by mountain vistas or striking resort architecture. That makes it really convenient for some family members to head to the slopes or tubing runs while others try an equally invigorating outdoor sport.
Each resort offers multiple sessions during the day, so you can choose to skate exactly when it fits your schedule. Skating after dark is a special experience, so step onto the ice during an evening session while your friends or family go night skiing.
Each Boone Area skating spot has rental skates available and instructors are on hand to teach you the basics. You can even learn the not-so-basic moves of figure skating taught by instructors with impressive professional credentials.
The ski area boasts North Carolina's only Zamboni-maintained outdoor ice rink. There's plenty of rinkside spectator seating and a bonfire to keep you warm. The rink sits on a scenic rise with spectacular views of the ski slopes on one side and rippling distant mountains on the other. Three daily ice skating sessions are offered from noon to 2 pm, 2:30 to 4:30, and 7 to 9 pm. Call 800-322-2373. Click here for more information.
Beech Mountain may just have the most historic High Country setting for ice skating-surrounded by the alpine-style architecture, shops, and eateries of Beech Tree Village. The ski area's 7,000 square-foot ice skating rink is flanked by spectator seats. Five daily sesssions are offered Sunday through Thursday and six sessions are offered on Friday and Saturday. The resort's 10,000 square foot ice rink is near Sugar's snow tubing facility and adjacent to The Sugar Mountain Sports Shop Annex and the pro shop for skate rentals. The Sugar Mountain Resort restaurant is on-site too and perfectly placed for a pre- or post-skate bite or just a cup of hot chocolate to warm up. Sugar's sessions are offered at 10 am, 12 pm, 2, 4, 6, and 8 pm. Children 11 and under are required to have a parent skate with them and a waiver is needed.
