Mountain Biking

Trail riding is at its finest in the high country

Rocky Knob BikersIt is a great time to discover mountain biking in the Boone Area. Easy to expert trails await in one of the most exciting places in the high country to ride a mountain bike.

Named one of the country's "Ultimate Ride Hotspots" by Velo Magazine and "a bonafide masterpiece" by Pink Bike Magazine, Boone's state-of-the-art Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park, opened in 2011 and new trail enhancements plus skills areas continue to be added and improved upon each year. Rocky Knob trails are typically open from dawn to dusk from April 1 until December 1. The trail system does close in the winter months to keep from eroding during freeze and thaw conditions. There are no user fees for the park or trails.

Mountain bikers have many Boone area options. Travel just 20 miles from the town of Boone and experience the Town of Beech Mountain's Emerald Outback trail system with 8 miles of single- and double-track trails open at cool, more-than-mile-high elevations. During the summer, Beech Mountain Resort offers mountain bike rentals, lessons, and trails for riding.  Sugar Mountain is also a popular destination from July through early September when chairlift rides give cyclists and their mountain bikes a lift to the top for exciting descents from the summit.

Besides Rocky Knob, Emerald Outback, Beech Mountain Resort, and Sugar Mountain, there is the Boone Greenway. The Greenway's diverse trail system offers a single track that complements a wonderful assortment of paved riverside rides.
